Should you clean a new gun before shooting it for the first time?

In most cases, yes. Read the owner's manual, clean and lubricate as directed, and confirm the bore is clear before the first shot. Leave designated factory lubricants in place when the manufacturer instructs you to do so.

Is it bad to shoot a new gun without cleaning it?

Do not assume a new firearm is ready to fire. Follow its first-use instructions and check for bore obstructions, excess oil, and shipping residue. A firearm that the manufacturer specifies as ready to fire is different from one requiring initial cleaning.

Do new guns come with oil in the barrel?

Some do. Shipping protection varies by maker. Remove bore oil and grease as the firearm manual directs, then confirm the bore and chamber are clear before firing.

Do I need to break in a new rifle barrel?

Follow the rifle or barrel maker's guidance. There is no universal round count or shoot-and-clean sequence. MSS's optional Accuracy Oil conditioning procedure is a product-specific process, not a replacement for the firearm maker's instructions.

How do I remove Cosmoline from a surplus rifle?

Use a cleaner compatible with the firearm's materials and finishes, allow label-directed contact time, and remove loosened residue carefully. Our Carbon Destroyer XX is intended for heavy grease, including Cosmoline. Older surplus firearms should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith before firing.

What should I bring on my first range trip with a new gun?

Bring the owner's manual, the correct ammunition, eye and ear protection, a small cleaning kit, and a notepad. Learn the range rules, check the bore before firing, and stop to investigate unusual operation rather than continuing to shoot.

Can I use the same cleaner on a new gun as a used one?

Yes, when it is appropriate for the firearm's materials and finishes and consistent with the manual. A new firearm may need more attention to shipping residue than accumulated fouling. Use each MSS cleaner for its intended task and follow its label and safety data sheet.
